Our courses range from one to nine days. The longer courses are not more difficult, they simply go into more detail and you experience a broader range of tools and techniques.

Most courses will have three to four participants. You can be almost any age. The youngest student we've had so far was 6 years of age. And the oldest was 78. Participants are from all walks of life and often have vastly different levels of woodworking experience, from complete novices to trade teachers. But there is one characteristic most students do have in common. They have a desire to learn more about a sustainable, tactile and insightful approach to working with wood.

In the open-air workshop, you’ll have your own pole lathe, draw horse and hand tools. We'll guide you through the experience you seek – in a way, and at a pace, that suits you.

Scroll down to read a brief description of each course. Fees listed include refreshments, a light lunch and all materials. If you'd like more information about any of our courses we'd welcome your call or email.

If you are looking for accommodation while on a course, there's lots of options.

Discover green woodworking
One day $275

This course introduces you to the wonder of traditional green woodworking. First you plant a tree. Then you source wood from the surrounding bush. The remainder of the day is spent in an open-air workshop learning to use the simple, yet versatile hand tools. You’ll follow a process that takes you from freshly cut log to chair leg. Through the log-to-leg experience you come to understand how tools work. You finish the day having created a stool leg, rolling pin, mallet, simple spoon, honey dipper, child’s toy or just a beautiful piece of turned green wood.

Learn to make spoons
One day $275

Twice a year we run a spoon-making course. This is for people who want to explore a special strand of traditional woodworking. Often, students will already have had a go at making a spoon but want to learn more about tools and techniques. For others, the idea has piqued their interest and they want some practical guidance to get them started. You'll experience using both green and seasoned wood.

Make simple green wood furniture
Two days $480

The first day of this course is similar to the Discover Green Woodworking course in which you complete a single piece. Most furniture requires the bringing together of two or more pieces of wood. Traditionally mortise and tenon joints are used to connect pieces. Here, green wood – which shrinks and changes shape as it dries – presents challenges but also opportunities. You learn how to construct strong green wood joints. And you make a piece of furniture that can stand the test of time. Most students choose to make a simple stool because doing so exposes them to a wide variety of tools and techniques.

Become a green woodworker
Four days $860

This course is for people who want to explore green woodworking more deeply or want the skills to go on and work independently. On this course students often choose to make either a drawhorse or pole lathe which are two of the essential tools in the serious green woodworker's kit. Other projects students have undertaken include: woven seat post and rung stools, bush seats and tables and saddle-seat bar stools. If you have a project in mind, let us know and we can talk through what's possible in the four days.

Make a green wood chair
Nine days $1950

Twice each year we run a nine-day chair maker's course. There is no pre-requisite skill level. Through making a green wood chair, and learning alongside others, you gain the confidence and skills to tackle any green woodworking project. You might choose to build a Windsor chair, Ladder Back chair, Jimmy Possum chair or a piece of your own design.

You will be immersed in a pure and rich green woodworking experience. You return home with a beautiful piece of hand-crafted furniture that just over one week before was inside a living tree.
