Longer courses
In-Depth Woodworking Workshops
Our longer courses are immersive experiences designed to introduce a wide range of tools and techniques. The longer courses are not more difficult, they simply go into more detail and offer an opportunity to grow your skills with greater practice. All our longer courses include time to plant a tree in acknowledgement of the life cycle that we intersect as woodworkers, and with a thought towards the needs of future woodworkers.
Chair Courses: Build a Chair from a Tree
COURSE LENGTH: NINE DAYS
This nine-day immersion is the ultimate experience in green woodworking. There is no pre requisite skill level. Through making a green wood chair and learning alongside others you’ll gain the confidence and skills to tackle any green woodworking project. You’ll return home with a beautiful piece of handcrafted furniture that just over a week before was the trunk of a fallen tree.
Rustic Bench Making: Five-Day Green Woodworking Project
COURSE LENGTH: FIVE DAYS
This five-day course offers an immersive opportunity to design and build a rustic wooden bench using traditional green woodworking techniques. Starting with freshly split timber, you'll use axes, drawknives, and other hand tools to shape and assemble each component. Along the way, you'll gain insight into joinery, form, and the relationship between utility and beauty. This course is ideal for anyone looking to deepen their connection to both material and craft by making a large-scale, functional piece rooted in tradition. The longer duration and larger scale of this project provides greater opportunity to practice and improve your skills.
Green Woodworker: Four-Day Hand Tool Woodworking Course
COURSE LENGTH: FOUR DAYS
This four-day deep dive helps you refine your technique while creating a post-and-rung stool with a woven seat. It’s an opportunity to grow your skills in a supportive environment and leave with both a finished piece and a foundation for future independent woodworking. This course offers an opportunity to practice the foundation skills of green woodworking - riving, axing, and the drawknife. Lots of mortise and tenon joinery to practice as well. The woven seat will be made from locally harvested Cumbungi (bullrush). Each object you make is a step in your journey—a tangible record of progress and care. While this course is a natural progression from the Discover green woodworking course, there is no prerequisite experience necessary.
Make Simple Furniture: Joinery and Stool Making
COURSE LENGTH: 2 DAYS
Over two days, you’ll learn the principles of green wood joinery—a cornerstone of traditional woodworking techniques. We begin the first day by riving our stool legs from a log and shaping them with axes and drawknives before turning the legs to shape on a pole lathe. On day two we learn to construct strong, lasting mortise and tenon joints and build a stool that is both beautiful and functional. Enjoy the reward of sitting on a piece of furniture you made yourself.
